“To believe your own thoughts, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men – that is genius.”

 – Ralph Waldo Emerson

I was driving to work in my car today and all of a sudden I felt the urge to take a different route, but my mind was telling me that it didn’t make sense because it would take longer for me to get there.  I kept arguing with myself about it until I realized what I was doing- arguing with myself.  Why would I do that?

It then dawned on me that inside of me there existed a battle between my intuition and my intellect.  I realized just how often my intuition and intellect disagree (I am sure that you can relate).  But the question is, how does this really affect our lives?  How does it affect our lives when we are faced with a dramatic event such as a divorce involving all its legal crap, motions and judgments?

We are the only species on this planet that places a greater value on our minds (intellect) than our intuition; we are taught to ignore our intuition. Whether you believe in a higher power, or the universal laws, or nothing at all – our varying beliefs do not change the fact that we possess certain intuitive capabilities.

Shouldn’t that tell us something?

Consider this:  Anger and ego aside, do you feel good about the decisions you have made so far regarding your divorce process?  Do you feel really good?  Do you feel as though you wouldn’t change a thing?   Would you go back and change anything?  If you answered no to any of these questions – that’s okay.

As you journey through your divorce, you should consider taking a step back, taking a deep breath, and focusing on what your inner guide (intuition) is telling you to do when faced with any decision.  You can even practice this in other areas of your life.

  • Quiet your mind

  • Listen

  • Ask yourself:  What do I want?  What is best for me?  What is best for my children?

Ask yourself these questions for every decision in your divorce and find what feels right.  After all, these are major decisions that you make and these decisions will create results that you must live with – no one else.

The next time you are unsure of what you should do, try listening to your intuition –  do not ignore it because it has the right answers; it always does.

Love begins with you.
